When people come to me in my practice, it is with an inherent wish to grow. They may not name it as such, the request tends to be centred around the need to be helped out of some problem- work, relationship, health and finances are top of the list. Because let’s be honest, these are the things that can really drive you out of your comfort zones and make you look at your life.
But underneath these issues that drive us towards self-reflection lies a deeper longing for spiritual growth. Of course, this is not the case for everyone who ends up seeking some sort of help, but on some level ‘Like attracts like’ and those who seek my help always have a deep affinity with spirituality.
So what does spiritual growth really mean? Many people associate spiritual growth with a feeling of inner peace, greater intuition and creativity, and a deeper knowing (wisdom).
But is that always the form that growth takes?

Energy-wise there are two major flows in the system of all living beings:
- Cosmic energy- this originates from above and comes into the system of a living being through the crown chakra (top of your head)
- Earth energy- this comes in through your feet chakras (soles) and moves upwards filling your body and aura.
In a well-balanced being, the energies mix and are then released through theGrounding Cord. This energetic cord runs from your tailbone, the base of your spine and right down into the Earth where it eventually clicks into the centre of the Earth.
We in the Western World, are very mentally minded. We have grown up with the knowledge that mental education and achievement are the way forward. People are respected for what they know, much more than other human qualities. You can almost see this as one big competition about who has the most acute mind and we believe thatknowledge is power.
The mental capacities correspond with the element of Air. Mental information is in itself, flighty and airy and it needs to be connected with Earth energies in order to take form.
For example, ideas and plans to build a house are made with Air energy, building the house requires the real mortar and bricks energy of Earth energy. You have to be willing to get your hands dirty, as it were to really feel the energy of Earth.
So why do I talk about this in an article about spiritual growth?
Well because 9 out of 10 of the people in my practice have problems that primarily stem from a lack of grounding: stress, health problems, not being able to carry out their ideas or fulfilling their potential. And they automatically seek to solve this with more Air energy- prayer, talking to angels, reading spiritual scriptures, meditation. All are beautiful practices and very important to your soul life. But if we approach spirituality with the same mental aspirations as we grew up with, the danger exists that we increase our energetic imbalance, rather than supporting our need to find balance.
Spiritual growth therefore, is not per se an upward movement to connect with God, the Angels or the Masters. To embrace your true spirituality, is to seek balance. Balance with, as the Native American Indians called it, Father Sky and Mother Earth.
If you believe you are here to serve a Heaven-sent purpose, you need to help those Heavenly energies arrive on this Earth, you need to give them a firm footing and truly become a channel between Heaven and Earth. Only then will you be in balance and provide the Universe with the balance it seeks from you.
So feel for yourself what you need- in general as a person, and at this specific moment.
Because you will notice that with a firm grounding in the Earth, you can soar and comfortably experience Heavenly energies without losing your footing or feeling unsafe.
I have met very few people who were equally comfortable with Cosmic and Earth energies.
Most of us have a stronger and a weaker flow. And for balance, the weaker flow needs constant encouragement. That is where your true spiritual growth lies.
